Knights of Columbus

Holy Mother Mary Concil No. 3958

Smithtown, NY

The Knights of Columbus, a fraternal order of Catholic men, was one of the first parish organizations at St. Patrick's.  Angelo D'Alessandro was the driving force behind the formation of the Holy Mother Mary Council No.3958 Knights of Columbus.  The Council was established in 1954 and chartered in 1955.  Angelo served as the first Grand Knight, and the first Chaplain was Father Adam Willman.  Initially the Council had members from Smithtown, Hauppauge, Stony Brook, Commack, and Nissequogue, since many of the parishes in these areas had yet to be formed.  When chartered, the council included 50 members.  Today, there are more than 300 members, fast approaching 400.

The purpose of the Knights of Columbus is to bring Catholic gentlemen together in a fraternal atmosphere for God, Church, and country, and to assist, whenever possible, people in distress.  Members of the council meet twice each month at the Council House at 130 Lake Avenue South in Nesconset.  To become a Knight, members achieve different degrees or steps, with emphasis on God and Church, in conjunction with area councils.

The Holy Mother Mary Council sponsors the annual Memorial Day Parade in Smithtown, holds fund raisers for families in need, sponsors the Bishop's Smithtown Right to Life March and Breakfast, gives monetary contributions to Seminarians, displays "Keep Christ in Christmas " signs in Smithtown, awards scholarships for community service, delivers food to St. John of God and St. Joseph parishes on a weekly basis, provides breakfast to those going to Washington D.C. for the Right to Life March, sponsors a substance abuse poster contest at St. Patrick School, and much more.  The Knights also assist in many parish functions sponsored by the Church.

The Knights of Columbus also has an excellent insurance program that brother Knights can participate in at a rate they can afford.  After the September 11 tragedy, the Knights came to the aid of many families that suffered the loss of a loved one.
